TEABLE
Sustainable Innovation of Tea Dregs Materials
Under this proposition of exploring sustainability, we try to explore the relationship between humans and nature, nature and products, and humans and products. In the industrial process of tea, the final tea is brewed and consumed by people, as a kind of culture in chinese long history. In tea culture, the tea table defines the relationship between people and people, people and tea, and is one of the important parts of tea culture. Tea stems are processed through tea-based composite technology with super triple cement hardness and naturally emit tea polyphenol flavor, which is a good material for making furniture type.
Tea industry in China
The market size of Tea is huge in the Chinese market. Tea is a part of Chinese life. The data above shows the top four Tea markets, and tea production country in worldwide. China is the largest market in the world. (Statista,2022) Therefore, the planting, picking, processing, and transportation of tea is a very big market in China and needs to be noticed.
The waster of tea stems
The following diagram briefly illustrates the basic process of the tea industry. In entire tea industry produces two types of waste: tea stems and tea residue. Tea residue is often disposed of as wet waste in retail outlets and individual households.
Tea stems, however, will be treated as processing waste during the initial processing (stems can lead to a loss of tea taste), and based on China's tea market, the number of tea stems generated in China each year is huge (normally more than 1/2 the weight of the harvested tea leaves is lost after being de-stemmed), and this processing waste is mainly incinerated as a waste product of now.
The aim of this project
In this case, we want to make some changes in the process of tea processing, in the step of tea stalks being burned as waste, and propose the possibility of replacing traditional materials with tea stalks. This might be a new direction of sustainable development in the tea industry. We try to collect these tea stems and put them back into the market, and make them into valuable products to replace the incineration process. In this way, the ecological problems caused by centralized landfills and incineration in the industry can be addressed to a certain extent, and the market value of these wastes can be given back. Through the study of industrial and material, we design and manufacture a product that, while displaying aesthetics and functionality, tries to reduce the environmental pollution brought by waste and create a sustainable industry chain.
The wasterNature & Human & Teable of tea stems
In our current design, we chose green tea and black tea stems as the basic raw materials, this is because these two kinds of tea stems account for more than 50% of the production in the Chinese market (2022), and the problem of waste of the stem produced will be more serious in relative terms.
We can collect and reuse furniture remnants from the production of furniture. For example, the leftovers from the production of furniture bodies are reused as filler by refilling the cushions in coffee table sets. This filler is more environmentally friendly than the common EPP filler in the market during the production process, and can also bring the user the fragrance from the tea material, and at the same time has the characteristics of heat cooling.
We define TEABLE as a small coffee table with two states, storage and using, which can be placed in the corner of the wall as a home decoration, and unfolded by rotating to provide a tea drinking experience for 1-3 people. We adopted the traditional Chinese mortise and tenon method to design the structure, which ensures the stability of the structure and also reduces the use of industrialized parts.
TEABLE can be switched between storage and use by customised brass components.
